The B904 4.8v 4Ah is rechargeable with a long service life of up to 4 years in emergency lighting applications.

Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries are rechargeable, maintenance free, lightweight and compact. Thanks to its high energy density (30% - 40%), this enables them to store more energy in a smaller form factor resulting in a compact battery. Smaller in size but still able to power devices much longer compared to NiCd batteries with the same capacity.

NiMH batteries have a stable discharging voltage compared to SLA’s. This means that the supply voltage stays reasonably constant throughout the discharge cycle. Great for low power applications which need a stable supply voltage. It is less prone to suffer from voltage depression or memory effect; a condition in which the battery loses its maximum energy capacity due to repeated recharging after it is partially discharged. NiMH batteries are particularly advantageous for high current drain applications, due in large part to their low internal resistance.

Compared to NiCd, NIMH batteries are a safer alternative for the environment as they do not contain Cadmium, Lead or Mercury. These batteries can be sent back for recycling at the retailer or supermarket at which they were purchased or at recycle points or centres. NiMH does not cause a fire when exposed to oxygen unlike Lithium-ion as the latter explodes in the presence of oxygen.

Widely used in wireless communications devices, mobile computing, exit signs, emergency lights, portable electronic devices such as digital cameras, portable audio players, automotive batteries, medical instruments, camcorders, electric toothbrushes, and other low-cost consumer devices.

It is important not to store NiMH batteries in the discharged state for long periods. They should be stored with at least 30% charge in the open-circuit condition for no longer than 6 months within an ambient temperature of -20°C to +30°C & a relative humidity of 60% to 85%. If the temperature ranges are exceeded, performance and operational life of the cells will be reduced.

When using a battery pack which has not been supplied by the emergency lighting manufacturer, always ensure that it is correctly rated for the application.
